would really appreciate it if anyone who likes my art could follow this blog! ⇢

opalavocado:

this is gonna be my main art portfolio where I reblog and post all my best work. All my other blogs are very messy showing all my research and builds up and annoying texts posts and half finished stuff, so if you’re just interested in pure art then this is a better place to follow. I will also be finishing my working blogs after college and only posting on this blog so it will be soon the only place to see my art :-)

Final installation piece show casing exhibition by Georgia Gibson, “Under the dress, beneath the flower”, 2014. Putting on my first exhibition! Largely focusing on the topic of my project this year, which started out as looking at body shaming and gender shaming in art and media. The exhibition as a whole looks at the way women’s bodies are censored and often frowned upon when shown and spoken about, yet still sexualised and feminised by the media, all while also looking at preconceptions of what women are, how they work in art and how a vagina is not all their is to being a woman, or even part of being a woman. My main goal is to question all of this while ironically presenting it in a very gender stereotypical manner. Pieces being shown include "Building a nest for womanhood" 2013 (+ many more nest pieces), Things I can show in my art sketchbook instead of another 2cm’s of a woman’s body, 2013  (+ a large amount of new extra work with polaroids of the same style), All the boys love long hair, Fruit of the womb (a large collection of gender ceramics work yet to be shown online) and more including stitching and other ceramic work. The exhibition is at Empty Shop, in Durham (address is on the poster but clicking the link leads you to a web page with directions) on the 30th of January, 7-9pm (though anyone is welcome to stay for drinks after). It’s going to be quite small (as it’s my first ever exhibition) but anyone is welcome to come along!

I’m doing an exhibition in durham! Not sure if anyone who follows me is from around here/able to get here for this night but if they could that would be great to have the support! I’m very very nervous and excited for this. I feel like it’s perhaps the best or the worst thing to happen to me in forever. But I feel as though any experience in this sort of stuff in a good one, and I’m having positive vibes. Any reblogs would be so appreciated; someone who follows you may be able to attend even if you can’t! (eeeeeeep)

Introduction

georgiagraceartthird:

My first idea for this project is to start off with the loose theme of Feminism.  Though I will be having this as my main, broad theme, I manly want to look into part of feminism which focuses on how women are expected to portray themselves in society, whether this be how they are expected to act or how they are expected to look, for their ‘own sake’ or for the pleasures on men and the patriarchy. I first decided to do this topic after completing my Unit 2 project on Rape Culture, feeling that feminism was the right area of art for me to work in, as I am incredibly passionate about everything to do with it. I got very into my last project, documenting my work on popular blogging platform tumblr and receiving over 1,500 followers, mostly young women who felt the same wanted to take a stand against sexism- a lot of which was provoked by the media, inspiring my idea for my new topic. I felt at first that looking at why women are forced to shave, or be photoshopped, or wear make up 24/4 was quite a step down from the tragedy and shock factor of rape culture, but after looking deeply into the effects with media driven controlling society has (rises in labioplasties, eating and mental disorders in young women, bullying to the point of suicide, etc) I realise every aspect of feminism is just as important as it all goes towards one thing; equality for women.

Although your art project is over, I still want to print about 100 pages of your piece and post it everywhere; it is just so compelling

of course you can still do that! I’ll still reblog any photos put up and obviously it’s still a great thing to spread around. I’ll be starting a new project soon though and will hopefully be getting other people involved in that :-)

Ms. Gibson, I stumbled across your project and felt compelled to give it a listen. I thought it'd be interesting to record my reaction as I listened to your installment. Every story that passed only brought me deeper and deeper into an unidentifiable sense of 'lost' i didn't know what to feel and, worse- could do nothing but listen. I didn't finish your recording. I had to stop listening. I'd like to send you the video. It's yours if you want it.

I’d love that so so so much! I think you might be able to submit it via this tumblr if not ask for my email. I love this idea.

is there a a translation posted anywhere for two of the clips from your rape audio stories piece? i speak english, there were two i wasn't able to understand. just curious! it impacted me a lot, btw. thank you for doing what you're doing xx

Sadly not, I didn’t actually receive any transcripts when the audio files from my lovely submitters were sent over :( I don’t know whether you may be able to type something into google translate? I’m not sure, very sorry I can’t help, thank you for the compliments anyway! xx

I just wanted to say thank you for making your piece, and the matching audio. It was honest and raw and perfect, and I am writing this in my room, bawling my eyes out because of how perfect and amazing your project was. I was so moved.

Oh my, thank you so much, honestly.

I forgot about this until now but a day or two ago I saw this flyer taped to a streetlight on Broadway (in New York City) — the background image is made up of tumblr asks pasted on top of each other, all having to do with people’s experiences with rape and rape culture.
Does anyone know where these flyers came from? Bravo to whoever’s putting these up!
